July and August throw heat, humidity, and periodic drought at grass that doesn’t naturally want to grow in these conditions.
Understanding what’s normal stress versus what’s a problem, and knowing how to help your lawn survive summer without constant intervention, makes the difference between a lawn that bounces back in fall and one that struggles for months.

Why Illinois Summers Are So Hard on Lawns
Before we talk about solutions, understand what your lawn is fighting against.
Cool-season grass in a warm climate: The grass varieties we plant in northern Illinois (Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, tall fescue) thrive at 60-75°F. When temperatures hit 85-95°F—which happens regularly in Orland Park and New Lenox from July through August—these grasses are operating outside their comfort zone.
Heat plus humidity: It’s not just the temperature. Chicago-area humidity prevents evaporative cooling. Your grass can’t transpire efficiently, so it overheats more easily than it would in dry heat.
Inconsistent rainfall: Some summers bring adequate rain. Others deliver three-week dry spells punctuated by heavy storms that run off more than they soak in. This variability makes planning irrigation difficult.
Clay soil challenges: Our heavy clay soil compounds problems. When dry, it becomes rock-hard and prevents water penetration. When wet, it stays saturated and can suffocate roots. There’s not much middle ground.
Compounded stress: A lawn stressed by heat is more vulnerable to disease, insects, and weed competition. These problems layer on top of each other.

Recognizing Drought Stress vs. Disease vs. Dormancy
Not all brown grass indicates the same problem. Here’s how to tell what you’re dealing with.
Drought stress symptoms:
- Grass blades fold or roll lengthwise (trying to reduce sun exposure)
- Footprints stay visible—grass doesn’t spring back when walked on
- Grass turns blue-gray before turning brown
- Browning starts in high spots, slopes, or areas with thin soil
- Affects entire lawn relatively uniformly, not random patches
Heat stress (different from drought):
- Grass looks wilted even with adequate soil moisture
- Tips of blades turn brown while base stays green
- Worst on south and west-facing slopes
- Usually appears during extreme heat (90°F+) even with irrigation
Fungal disease:
- Circular or irregular patches of brown grass
- May see white, gray, or pink fuzzy growth on blades in early morning
- Often appears after humid, wet periods
- Spreads outward from initial infection point
- Other areas of lawn may look fine
Grub damage:
- Brown patches where grass pulls up like loose carpet
- No roots attached—grubs have eaten them
- Usually appears in late summer (August-September)
- Often accompanied by animal digging (skunks, raccoons looking for grubs)
Natural summer dormancy:
- Entire lawn turns uniformly tan or straw-colored
- Grass isn’t dead—it’s dormant to conserve resources
- Crown (base) of plant stays alive even though blades are brown
- Bounces back green when cooler weather and rain return
The key distinction: drought stress and dormancy are survival strategies. Disease and pest damage are actual harm.
The Dormancy Decision: Let It Go Brown or Keep It Green?
Here’s the question many Homer Glen and Mokena homeowners face: should you water enough to keep grass green all summer, or let it go dormant?
Letting grass go dormant:
Pros:
- Conserves significant water (and money on water bills)
- Reduces mowing frequency dramatically
- Grass enters natural survival mode—not harming it
- Works with nature rather than fighting it
Cons:
- Brown lawn for 4-8 weeks depending on weather
- Weed seeds may germinate in thin spots
- Complete dormancy requires commitment—you can’t water sporadically
How to do it right: If you choose dormancy, commit fully. Don’t water at all once grass enters dormancy. Sporadic watering (just enough to partially green up the lawn) stresses grass more than staying fully dormant. Only water if we go 4+ weeks with no rain and grass crowns show signs of dying (pull up a plant—if crown is completely brown and brittle, not just tan, you need emergency water).
Keeping grass green:
Pros:
- Lawn stays attractive all summer
- Grass continues some growth—can outcompete weeds
- Easier on grass that’s already stressed from other factors
Cons:
- Requires 1-1.5 inches of water per week during dry periods
- Water bills increase significantly
- More frequent mowing needed
- Still may see some browning during extreme heat
How to do it right: If you’re watering to maintain green grass, you need to provide adequate water. Light frequent watering (10 minutes every day) is worse than no water—it encourages shallow roots and wastes water to evaporation. Deep, infrequent watering is essential.
For most southwest suburb homeowners, a middle approach works best: Maintain green grass in highly visible areas (front yard, around patios) while letting back or side yards go dormant. This balances aesthetics with water conservation.

Proper Summer Watering: Getting It Right
If you’re watering to maintain your lawn through summer, technique matters enormously.
How much: Grass needs 1-1.5 inches of water per week total (including rainfall). Measure by placing empty tuna cans around the lawn—when they have 1 inch of water, you’ve applied enough.
How often: Water deeply 1-2 times per week rather than lightly every day. Deep watering encourages roots to grow deeper seeking moisture. Shallow frequent watering keeps roots near the surface where they’re more vulnerable to heat stress.
What time: Early morning (4-8 a.m.) is ideal. Grass blades dry quickly as sun comes up, reducing disease risk. Watering midday loses water to evaporation. Evening watering keeps grass wet overnight, encouraging fungal disease.
How to check if you’re watering enough: Push a screwdriver into soil an hour after watering. It should penetrate 6 inches easily. If it stops at 2-3 inches, you’re not watering deeply enough.
Clay soil considerations: Our heavy soil can’t absorb water quickly. If you try to apply 1 inch in one session, much of it runs off. Use cycle-and-soak method: water 15 minutes, let it soak in for 30 minutes, water another 15 minutes, repeat until you’ve applied full amount.
Municipal water restrictions: Many southwest suburbs implement watering restrictions during drought. Orland Park, New Lenox, and surrounding areas typically allow watering on designated days. Check your local ordinances and adjust watering schedule accordingly. If restricted to once weekly, apply the full week’s water in that session.
Mowing Height: Your Best Heat Defense
Raising mower height is the single easiest thing you can do to help your lawn handle summer stress.
Summer mowing height: 3.5 to 4 inches. Yes, that’s taller than the 3 inches you mowed in spring. Here’s why it matters:
Taller grass = deeper roots: Grass cut at 3.5-4 inches develops roots 50% deeper than grass cut at 2 inches. Deeper roots access moisture and nutrients that shallow roots can’t reach.
Shade = cooler soil: Taller grass blades shade soil, reducing surface temperature by 10-15°F. Cooler soil means less water evaporation and less heat stress on roots.
More leaf area = better food production: Taller grass has more blade surface for photosynthesis, producing more energy to sustain the plant through stress.
Weed suppression: Taller grass shades soil, preventing weed seed germination. Crabgrass particularly struggles to establish under grass taller than 3 inches.
Don’t scalp: If grass has grown taller than 4 inches, don’t cut it back to 3.5 inches in one mowing. That’s scalping—removing more than one-third of blade height—which severely stresses grass. Raise height gradually over multiple mowings.
Mowing frequency in summer: During active growth (adequate water, moderate temps), mow weekly. During heat stress or dormancy, you may only need to mow every 2-3 weeks. Let grass growth guide you—mow when it reaches 5-6 inches, cutting back to 3.5-4 inches.
Sharp blades essential: Dull mower blades tear grass rather than cutting cleanly. Torn blades turn brown at tips, lose more moisture, and are more susceptible to disease. Sharpen blades monthly during growing season.
Fertilizer: Stop Pushing Growth in Summer
Here’s what many homeowners get wrong: they see their lawn struggling and apply fertilizer thinking it needs nutrients. That’s backwards.
Summer fertilization rule for Illinois: From late June through August, reduce or eliminate nitrogen fertilizer. Cool-season grass doesn’t want to grow vigorously in 85-90°F heat. Forcing growth with high nitrogen fertilizer during heat stress:
- Increases water demand when water is scarce
- Makes grass more susceptible to disease
- Can burn already-stressed grass
- Wastes money on fertilizer grass can’t effectively use
What to do instead: If your fertilization program includes summer application, use a fertilizer with lower nitrogen content (something like 10-0-10 rather than 30-0-10) or skip the application entirely. Save heavy fertilization for fall, when grass naturally wants to grow and can actually use those nutrients.
Exception: If your lawn is thriving with adequate water and moderate temperatures, light fertilization is fine. Let grass performance guide you—actively growing, green grass can handle fertilizer; stressed, struggling grass can’t.
Disease Management in Humid Illinois Summers
Summer humidity creates perfect conditions for lawn diseases. Recognizing and responding appropriately prevents minor issues from becoming major problems.
Brown patch (most common summer disease):
- Circular brown patches 6 inches to several feet in diameter
- Grass in center dies while outer edge shows darkening
- Appears during hot, humid weather
- Most active when nighttime temps stay above 70°F
Dollar spot:
- Small silver-dollar-sized tan spots
- Multiple spots may merge into larger dead areas
- Appears when grass is under drought stress but humidity is high
Pythium blight:
- Greasy-looking collapsed grass
- Develops rapidly during extreme heat and humidity
- Grass looks water-soaked and matted
Prevention beats treatment:
- Water early morning so grass dries quickly
- Avoid watering in evening—wet grass overnight encourages disease
- Don’t overfertilize in summer (promotes lush growth vulnerable to disease)
- Improve air circulation—trim low tree branches, thin dense plantings
- Maintain proper mowing height
When to treat: Fungicide applications can stop disease spread but are expensive and require repeated applications. For small patches (under 10% of lawn), disease often resolves on its own when weather changes. For extensive damage or recurring problems, professional diagnosis and treatment makes sense.
